Neuro-Diverse Friendly Weekend Itinerary in North Alabama
Lake Weiss is one of the crown jewels of North Alabama. It’s 30,000-acre lake with 447 miles of shoreline that sits almost precisely between Huntsville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Birmingham. It's less than a two-hour drive from any of these cities and home to remarkable neuro-diverse travel experiences for both the sensory-sensitive and sensory-seeking alike.
Because every neurodiverse traveler is unique in their own way, this guide isn't written as a one-size-fits-all itinerary. It establishes a home base for adventures and highlights destinations less than an hour away while paying special attention to sensory needs and potential triggers.
Stay at Starlight Haven

Starlight Haven is a glamping resort on the shores of Weiss Lake. It offers several styles of glamping tents and cabins, complete with a kitchenette, gas grill, and hot tub. Best of all, they're graciously spaced out, so there's ample room between you and the nearest neighbor. It's like camping but with air conditioning, comfortable beds, and indoor plumbing.
We had the opportunity to stay in two different cabins during our visit. Our first cabin was a geodesic dome with excellent natural light streaming in from the large, clear front window and a skylight in the ceiling. The second cabin was called the modern cabin, with a larger downstairs floor space and more usable space because of the traditional square walls.
Both cabins featured a queen bed on the first floor and two twin beds in the upstairs loft that are accessed by a ladder. Sensation-seeking kids might enjoy the views from the skylight in the dome, but you would have to run the fan full-time to circulate the hot air out. The sensory sensitive might appreciate better thermal control in the modern cabin loft. The dome ceiling also constricted the vertical clearance of one of the beds. If need be, there was enough floor space in the modern cabin to move the mattress downstairs, where the bathroom is located, and avoid the ladders entirely.
Starlight Haven has a communal fire pit and 1,500 ft of shoreline to let you try your luck fishing in the "Crappie Capital of the World." It also has a dock with an easy-access floating kayak launch and a small fleet of sit-atop kayaks that are complementary with your stay. Several small bays on the headwaters of Weiss Lake make excellent short paddles from the dock at Starlight Haven.
Centre / Cedar Bluff

Centre and Cedar Bluff are the closest towns to Starlight Haven. Cedar Bluff was the original county seat when the Cherokee Nation ceded this land in 1835. Today, Cedar Bluff has a Dollar General, Piggly Wiggly, and a commercial marina. Centre is a much larger town with modern grocery stores, several restaurants, and a modest historic downtown.
Things To Do In Centre and Cedar Bluff

The area has several commercial marinas with powerboats and jet ski rentals. There's also the Pirates Bay Waterpark, with three acres of slipping and splashing fun. Another fun family outing could be going to 411 Twin Drive In, a classic drive-in theater with notoriously good fresh-cooked food.
We visited Cherokee Rock Village, located on the bluffs overlooking the lake. It was a quiet space with lots of room to spread out and numerous sandstone boulders to climb up, around, and even through. There are over 200 climbing and bouldering routes and seven miles of hiking trails in the park. Another neat feature is that the park actively encourages RC rock crawling, an extreme form of off-road driving using specialized radio-controlled vehicles to overcome obstacles.
Featured Centre Restaurant

Docks and Decks is our featured Centre Restaurant because of its classic American menu and, as you would guess from the name, expansive outdoor seating overlooking Lake Weiss. Of note, to either attend or avoid, Docks and Decks offers live music most Friday and Saturday nights from 8:00 to 10:00.
Fort Payne

Fort Payne is a historic railroad town 35 minutes from Starlight Haven. The beautiful depot was converted into the Fort Payne Depot Museum, filled with Native American and railroad curios. The town is built around Gault Avenue, with boutique shops and an active lineup of festivals. The most regular event is the Third Saturday Sunset Cruise-In during the spring and summer. It's a family-friendly event featuring live music, food vendors, downtown shops, and over 200 classic cars and trucks on display. A brand new Food City grocery store makes Fort Payne an attractive stop to stock your cabin's kitchenette or visit the in-store deli to picnic in the town's beautiful Alabama (the band) Walking Park.
Things To Do In Fort Payne

We've already mentioned a lot to do in the town of Fort Payne, but the area's most beautiful attraction is only a few miles outside of town on the way to Lake Weiss, Little River Falls. The main falls have a 45' drop with massive water flow just off Highway 35. You'll find a large parking area with easy boardwalk paths to the viewing area.
You can't enter the water at Little River Falls, but a splish-splashing good time waits just around the corner. There's a 3/4 mile trail to the "Hippie Hole," where you'll hear the sounds of rushing water throughout your hike. The trail is relatively flat except for the final approach to the river, where 137 steep sandstone steps get you to the water. Hippie Hole is a classic swimming hole where you can splash and float in the relatively still water below the falls.
Featured Fort Payne Restaurant

Little River Burgers & Brews is our featured restaurant, which, despite the name, is located in downtown Fort Payne and not along the Little River. The front door is just off Gault Avenue, but a large parking area is at the back of Railroad Avenue. Entering from the rear lets you scope out a seat on the back patio or gauge the inside noise level.
We visited on a Saturday afternoon and found the interior volume off-putting, so it would be good to have a pivot in mind, such as a picnic in the park if you can't find an acceptable table. Their burgers were very tasty, with seasoned french fries available for relatively safe food flavor exploration.
Mentone

Mentone is known as a quaint mountain village atop Lookout Mountain. It's 45 minutes from Starlight Haven but close enough to Fort Payne to do both on a single trip. At nearly 2,000 ft elevation, it's a welcome escape from the summer heat and a gem when the leaves turn color in the fall. There's even the Cloudmount Ski area nearby (such as it is), but that's a different trip for a different season.
Things To Do In Mentone

DeSoto State Park is "the thing to do" in Mentone, but it can be a little confusing. The main park unit has hiking trails and some small waterfalls, but the big draw is the 104-foot-tall DeSoto Falls, which is in a separate area labeled DeSoto Falls Picnic Area. The primary parking area for the falls allows you to see them from the top, but yet another parking area (DeSoto Falls Trailhead) has a two-mile out-and-back trail to an overlook platform below the falls.
When we visit the falls, we park at the top, where there's a little swimming area, view the falls from the top, and then kayak up the river. The park rents kayaks, and it's a leisurely 2.5-mile flatwater paddle up the river to the Highway 117 bridge and back.
Featured Mentone Restaurant

Dining in Mentone has been hit or miss for us because it's a small town with only a few restaurants that are only open at peak times. Word to the wise: do your research ahead of time. One such restaurant is the Wildflower Cafe, which is often called the best restaurant in DeKalb County and the Best Cafe in Alabama.
Their traditional hours are Thursday 11-2 pm, Friday & Saturday 11-3 pm, 4-8 pm, and Sunday 11-2 pm. They recommend reservations for Friday and Saturday dinners, and we recommend you discuss their live dinner music when you call so you can sit closer or farther from the stage or pick a different venue.
Despite all the caveats, the main menu has many flavorful options with an extensive "kid at heart" menu for picky eaters. It also has a country store featuring many local artists to pick up souvenirs or allow for fidgeting while you wait.
Cave Springs

Cave Springs is a charming small Georgia town 25 minutes from Starlight Haven. It's a town of 1,200 people with two fudge shops, an ice cream parlor, and half a dozen antique stores in the one block downtown. What it doesn't have is fast food. Despite the town’s many charms, we found the selection and food quality of the local supermarket disappointing.
Things To Do In Cave Springs

It's well worth walking the charming downtown, but make a point to stop by the town's namesake cave spring in Rolater Park. There is a small cave with paths and electric lights that you can visit for a notional $2. You can see the springhead underground and enjoy the cool, moist air. You don't have to get muddy, but you can get dirty if you go exploring. Even if you explore everything, you can be in and out of the cave in 15 minutes. Outside the cave, you can splash in the spring run as it flows to Rolater Lake, the town's natural swimming pool. The water is clean enough that townspeople regularly fill their water bottles at the springhead.
Featured Cave Spring Restaurant

A&B Creekside Restaurant was the most peaceful restaurant we ate on the entire trip. It's adjacent to Rotaler Park with an outside patio along Little Cedar Creek. The food was excellent, with smoked BBQ and burger options available.
Closing Thoughts On This Neuro-diverse Friendly Weekend Itinerary

Starlight Haven makes an excellent haven to decompress and rest with the comforts of home and the quiet of the outdoors. Nearby towns offer ample opportunities to explore and adventure in North Alabama's natural playground. Few, if any, of these activities require reservations, so it's easy to pivot depending on temperature or temperament.
