If you're anything like me, you've probably experienced that familiar pang of anxiety when planning a trip. As someone who's navigated travel with a wheelchair, prosthetic limb, walker, a cane—you name it—I know firsthand how frustrating and isolating it feels to discover that supposedly "accessible" hotels, attractions, or restaurants actually aren’t. 

I've rushed last-minute to find alternative accommodations and hated feeling like I was inconveniencing my family or friends. So, when Visit North Alabama invited me to explore their region recently, covering Huntsville, Guntersville, Woodville, Decatur, and Mooresville, I cautiously packed my bags, expectations carefully measured.

But North Alabama didn't just meet my expectations—it absolutely blew them away. From downtown Huntsville's thoughtfully planned ramps and elevators making every sidewalk stroll easy and comfortable even with my prosthetic, to Mooresville’s charming and easily navigable paths, accessibility was woven seamlessly into the very fabric of their city structures.

Alabama didn't just welcome me; it empowered me, showing that travel without limits isn’t merely possible—it's thriving here. If you're ready to redefine your next accessible adventure, North Alabama is quietly but powerfully leading the way.

Navigating the City (Without Breaking a Sweat!)

Downtown Huntsville got accessibility so right, it almost felt unreal. Ramps seamlessly led onto sidewalks, elevators appeared exactly where I needed them, and streets were smooth enough for my prosthetic leg (and my peace of mind). Downtown was so incredibly walkable and fun that my health issues didn’t even make an appearance. 

And that time I was given a walking tour of the historic town of Mooresville by its own mayor (what?!), stories of the quaint, historic streets came alive while they felt equally effortless with its even pathways and quiet, sensory-friendly atmosphere.

If you know me, you know museums don’t exactly excite my adrenaline-loving heart. But North Alabama surprised me—big time.

Space Exploration in the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville was an accessible dream. Not only did they have wheelchair-friendly paths throughout, but they also nailed sensory inclusivity. 

The exhibits felt immersive without being overwhelming, and I genuinely got lost in space exploration without sensory overload. (Who knew learning about rockets could actually be relaxing?)

Into the Depths at Cathedral Caverns in Woodville

Cathedral Caverns was another standout. I won't lie, caves can be intimidating, especially with the tight spaces and uneven ground. Cathedral Caverns felt like it was built for inclusivity with its paved, even wheelchair-accessible paths throughout. 

The sensory-friendly lighting was a huge plus for me, as bright lights trigger sensory fatigue. Pro tip: Request the golf cart tour if steep inclines aren't your friend and you don’t have a powered wheelchair—it made the whole experience so comfortable!

Finding Long Lost Gear at Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro

Oh, and did you know that every piece of lost baggage ends up at Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama? Not only did it spark my quirky curiosity (hello, shrunken heads!), but the store layout was designed with accessibility in mind, from wide aisles to sensory-friendly lighting. 

Remember when I accidentally left my gimbal on the Emirates flight from Athens? Well, guess who finally decided to show up. Too bad I didn’t record the serial number or else I could have retrieved it for free!

Zip-lining as an Amputee at Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures in Lake Guntersville

I never thought I'd experience accessible ziplining again after my amputation due to outdated fears of prosthetics coming loose. Yet Lake Guntersville State Park’s Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventures made it happen and saw firsthand that it’s not possible. 

Trust me—I screamed loud every time I flew through the trees, and I loved every minute of it! The supportive staff helped me get into my harness and ensured I felt safe and empowered. If you crave adventure, this one’s a must.

Let’s Talk Food (Because, Obviously!)

Accessible dining goes beyond ramps—it’s about creating sensory-friendly spaces and menus that cater to dietary needs, too. 

Breakfast at Honest Coffee Roasters

Honest Coffee Roasters in Huntsville had me at their salted honey syrup and cinnamon Bees Knees latté. It was dreamy, calming, and set the perfect sensory-friendly start to my day. Their açai bowl had me going all day on my travel day, too!

Lunch at La Esquina Cocina in Guntersville

After ziplining, La Esquina Cocina in Guntersville warmed me right up with flavorful Mexican dishes suited to various dietary restrictions. 

Sensory bonus: the cozy ambiance and muted lighting was exactly the break I needed.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to ask for the ReTreet signature cocktail if you are a guest staying there! It’s to die for!

Dinner at The Salty Cod in Athens

The Salty Cod in Athens served the best fish and chips I've ever tasted unwrapped tableside that set my taste buds for the feast of their life. I rarely finish an entire meal at the restaurant and I nearly ate every crumb. 

Not to mention that their sensory-friendly dining room complete with dimmed lights and minimal noise brought me comfort after a long day of adventures and exploration. They even host sensory-friendly events year-round. A restaurant after my own heart!

My kit included sunglasses for my sensitive eyes, ear defenders to drown out unexpected noises, a weighted blanket (yes, please!), fidget toys, and a portable sound machine. These thoughtful touches turned my stay from just relaxing to totally rejuvenating.

My inner travel nerd was overjoyed—finally, a hotel that understood sensory challenges! Aside from the sensory kits, their accessible showers were truly next-level. No awkward moments trying to figure out grab bars or shower chairs—everything was perfectly designed.

Camping, but Without the Bugs and Heat at ReTreet Resort & Spa in Lake Guntersville

At ReTreet Resort & Spa in Lake Guntersville, I chose glamping because, well, why not? The "Launch Pad" themed tent felt like a playful nod to Huntsville’s space vibes. Even though I'd forgotten my shower sleeve (oops!), the resort promptly provided temporary grab bars and a shower chair without missing a beat. 

Little touches like temperature-controlled tents, heated blankets, adjustable lighting, and quiet spaces ensured total relaxation.
