Heroes and History
Lores and legends come together in Lawrence County with the Jesse Owens Memorial Park, Oakville Indian Mound, and the General Joe Wheeler Home: Pond Spring. The Jesse Owens Museum depicts Owens’ athletic and humanitarian achievements through interactive exhibits, a rare film, and memorabilia. Birth home replica, bronze statue, 1936 torch replica, and picnic pavilions are on-site. The Oakville Indian Mound Park features a Cherokee council house museum, a portion of the Black Warriors’ Path, the largest Woodland ceremonial Indian mound in Alabama, and a large Copena Indian burial mound. The 50-acre General Wheeler site includes a dogtrot log house built around 1818, a circa 1830 Federal-style house, the newly-restored 1870s Wheeler house, eight farm-related outbuildings, and more.
