Etowah
Waterfalls and Wine
Gadsden, the “City of Champions,” is the county seat of Etowah County and each August is the starting point for the World’s Longest Yard Sale that stretches up to Michigan. The town sits on the banks of the Coosa River and was once a busy port of commerce for the state. Attalla is Gadsden’s little neighbor to the northwest, and the city’s motto is “small but proud.” It was once a prominent Creek Indian village, and in 1887, Capt. W.P. Lay built the state’s first hydroelectric dam on Wills Creek to light the entire town. This venture marked the beginning of Alabama Power.
