Athens is located at the intersections of I-65, US Hwy 72 and US Hwy 31 in Limestone County Alabama. We are approximately 100 miles between Birmingham and Nashville. Athens has three exits from I-65, rail service and is in close proximity to the Elk and Tennessee Rivers. Pryor Field in Limestone County is the regional airport and Huntsville International is the closest international airport.
The first white settlement came to Athens in 1807 after the area was purchased by the United States from the Cherokee. Athens was incorporated on Nov. 19, 1818, and became a city before Alabama was a state. In 1819, voters made Athens the county seat of Limestone County.
