Dismals Canyon

You might know Dismals Canyon in Phil Campbell as one of North Alabama’s most magical outdoor adventures—home to rare glowworms (called Dismalites), hidden waterfalls, and ancient rock formations. But after a day of hiking and exploring the lush, otherworldly canyon, there's an even sweeter reward waiting for you: old-fashioned ice cream!

Stop by the country-style soda fountain inside the Dismals Canyon welcome center, where they serve up hand-dipped ice cream and other nostalgic treats. It’s the perfect cool-down after an enchanted walk through the canyon’s shady trails. From classic vanilla to seasonal flavors, it’s a charming and unexpected bonus to your nature trip.

🍨 Pro tip: Grab a cone and enjoy it on the porch swing out front—because every great hike deserves a sweet ending!

The Salty Cod

Located in the heart of downtown Athens, The Salty Cod may be known for its fresh seafood, but locals know there’s another hidden treasure inside - artisan gelato that’s cool, creamy, and completely irresistible.

While it’s technically not ice cream, this small-batch gelato is so rich and flavorful that it absolutely earned a spot on our North Alabama Ice Cream Shops list. With flavors rotating regularly - think pistachio, strawberry, dark chocolate, and more - you’ll want to stop in often to see what’s new behind the glass.

Handcrafted with love and a European flair, The Salty Cod’s gelato is perfect after a delicious meal or as a sweet treat on its own while strolling downtown. It’s the kind of creamy indulgence that turns a good day into a great one.

🍨 Pro tip: Get your gelato to-go and enjoy it on the square for a true Athens summer vibe!
