Festival of the Cranes

Each winter, Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge (WNWR) in Decatur, Alabama becomes home to an extraordinary natural spectacle: more than 14,000 Sandhill Cranes, along with several pairs of the endangered Whooping Cranes, settle into the refuge for the season. To celebrate the arrival of these iconic long-legged, long-necked birds, the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association hosts the annual Festival of the Cranes—a three-day event filled with educational programs, outdoor adventures, and family-friendly activities.

The 2026 Festival of the Cranes will take place January 9–11, with events happening at multiple locations throughout Decatur, including Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, the Princess Theatre, Cook Museum of Natural Science, Decatur Public Library, and the Alabama Center for the Arts.

Fun for Birders and Beginners Alike

Festival of the Cranes has become a beloved winter tradition, welcoming everyone from seasoned birders to curious first-timers. Whether you’re passionate about wildlife photography, eager to learn more about migratory birds, or simply looking for a unique winter experience, there’s something for everyone.

Throughout the weekend, visitors are invited to stop by the WNWR Observation Building (3121 Visitor Center Road, Decatur, AL 35603) to witness thousands of Sandhill Cranes and several Whooping Cranes, along with ducks, geese, raptors—and possibly even a bald eagle. The observation building is heated for comfort and equipped with bleachers and spotting scopes. Volunteers and staff will be on hand to answer questions and share insights, making this a perfect learning opportunity for all ages. Guests are encouraged to bring cameras and binoculars.
