A Dreamy Beginning

The story of The Hatter Café began not with a grand business plan, but with a serendipitous road trip. Pamela, an occupational therapist by trade, and her husband Roger, found themselves captivated by the charm of Mentone during a visit to the world's longest yard sale which took them through the area. Originally from Florida, the couple was taken by the town’s breathtaking natural beauty and the warm welcome of its residents. What started as a casual visit turned into a life-changing decision; within a month, they had purchased a house in Mentone, feeling an undeniable pull to make it their home.

The café’s Alice in Wonderland theme was born from Pamela’s creative vision, which initially sparked while planning a baby shower. Her fascination with the whimsical and nostalgic elements of the story made it the perfect theme for a café meant to be a gathering place filled with joy and memories.

A Cozy Café with Character

The Hatter Café isn’t just a place to grab a bite—it’s an experience. Located in a house built in the 1950s, the café has a rich history that adds to its charm. The building has previously served as an artist's gallery, a gift shop, and even a restaurant, making it a perfect canvas for Pamela’s imaginative decor.

Inside, guests are greeted with a cozy, vintage ambiance where every detail has been thoughtfully curated. From the delicate china to chandeliers made from teacups and antique hats, the décor at The Hatter Café feels like stepping into a whimsical time capsule. The attention to detail extends to the walls, where end tables have been repurposed as unique shelves for displaying teacups and other curiosities.

Southern Comfort with a Twist

The menu at The Hatter Café is a delightful fusion of classic Southern comfort food with a creative twist that nods to its Alice in Wonderland inspiration. Roger, who modestly refers to himself as a good home cook, takes pride in preparing dishes from scratch, using family recipes and fresh ingredients.

One of the standout items is the Meatloaf Pie, where seasoned potatoes, corn, cheddar cheese and bacon are baked inside a savory meatloaf crust—a fun and hearty take on a traditional dish. Another favorite is the Hot Brown, an open-faced smoked turkey sandwich served on homemade bread, topped with a rich Mornay sauce, and baked to perfection.

For those looking for something lighter, the café offers refreshing salads like the Pear and Gorgonzola Salad or the Chicken Salad Sandwich, which is served on homemade cinnamon raisin bread and topped with candied pecans. And let’s not forget the Cheshire Meow, a grilled cheese sandwich featuring Havarti cheese, pear, and fig jam—sure to satisfy both your taste buds and your sense of whimsy.
