Nestled in the quiet countryside of Toney, Alabama, just outside of Huntsville, you’ll find a vineyard steeped in love, legacy, and the irresistible aroma of ripening grapes. At La Famiglia Winery, wine isn’t just a drink—it’s a family tradition, a labor of love, and a community celebration. On this week’s episode of Unexpected Adventures in North Alabama, we sat down with Beverly Massa to uncork the story behind this charming winery. It’s a tale as rich and complex as the wine itself.

From Italy to Alabama: A Generational Dream

La Famiglia, which means “The Family” in Italian, began with deep-rooted traditions passed down through generations. Beverly and her husband Tom both come from Italian families who brought winemaking with them when they immigrated to the United States. What started as a small vineyard on family land in Illinois eventually followed them to Alabama, where the dream took root in a new location.

Over time, their wines began winning awards and gaining recognition. When the opportunity came to turn a lifelong passion into something more, the family took a leap. Today, La Famiglia Winery is the result of that dream, hand-built with love and a whole lot of hard work.

Grown with Care, Crafted with Purpose

Each bottle at La Famiglia is estate-made. The grapes are grown, harvested, and bottled on-site, resulting in wine that is uniquely North Alabama. Whether you prefer something dry, sweet, or in between, there’s something for every palate.

Highlights include VR Blanc, a crisp white that drinks like Sauvignon Blanc and serves as the backbone for several blends. Spiranza, meaning hope in Italian, is a cranberry-forward rosé created in support of breast cancer awareness, with proceeds benefiting the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund. There’s also Adore, Thedele, and the bold Crimson Cabernet, as well as a truly special red called Professor Zoe Zender, crafted from a rare Alabama-native grape. From fig wine to blackberry blends, everything is crafted with intention, and the community has embraced it all.

The Vineyard Life: Harvest, Heart, and Hospitality

Harvest season at La Famiglia is a full-family affair. The grapes are still handpicked, just as they were generations ago. After each harvest, the family gathers for a celebratory meal to give thanks and enjoy the fruits of their labor. The traditions passed down through time remain strong, just like the vines that grow each season.

Visitors to the winery will find more than just wine. La Famiglia offers a welcoming atmosphere where guests can stroll the grounds, sip wine under shaded patios or among the vines, and enjoy live music and rotating food trucks on Saturdays. Kids are welcome, designated drivers are appreciated with complimentary non-alcoholic options, and furry friends get water bowls and treats too.

Adopt-A-Vine: A Personal Connection to the Land

One of the winery’s most unique offerings is the Adopt-A-Vine program. For $75, guests can symbolically adopt a vine, receive a certificate, and attend an exclusive release party when that wine is bottled. It’s a thoughtful gift or a fun way to feel connected to the land. Many participants even visit their adopted vine, take photos, and return to taste the results.

Come for the Wine, Stay for the Family

The heart of La Famiglia Winery is its people. Everyone is treated like family, and every visit is an invitation to relax, connect, and celebrate. Complimentary tastings are offered, with options to purchase by the glass, bottle, or flight. The staff provides personalized recommendations based on your preferences, and there’s always a cozy spot waiting for you—whether you’re nestled by a fire pit in the fall or enjoying a sun-soaked afternoon in the vines.

While the winery operates seasonally and closes during January through March, there’s still plenty to enjoy through the rest of the year, especially in the fall. Fire pits, good wine, and even better company make it a destination worth planning for.
