Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheatre Operations Director Philip Formby Honored with “Good Neighbor” Friend of Tourism Award

Decatur, Ala. (September 24, 2020) - The Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association (AMLA) has honored Philip Formby with the 2020 “Good Neighbor” Friend of Tourism Award. The award is among 11 that comprise the 2020 PEAK Awards that were presented today at the AMLA Annual Meeting at 210 At The Tracks in Gadsden, Ala.

Representing the highest achievement in North Alabama tourism, the PEAK Awards honor individuals and organizations that have had a major impact on tourism in North Alabama. The “Good Neighbor” Friend of Tourism Award is presented to a person or organization whose body of work has had a significant impact on tourism in the past year.

For the past 25 years, Formby has worked for Albertville Parks and Recreation where he dreamt of a park expansion that would meet the needs of his local community, as well as open the door to new tourism growth. He advocated for tourism and the positive impact that the travel sports industry would have with his city council and community members. He spent hours researching and pulling together data. Site visits were taken, plans were drawn and a one-cent tax was passed. In just a few weeks, Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheatre, a multi-sports complex costing more than $60 million, will open its doors, and Formby will have his dream realized. His commitment to the sports tourism industry can be seen in the details of each field layout, in the seating capacity for the indoor competition pool, in the massive indoor, multi-court facility, in even the smallest details that make the new state-of-the-art-facility in Albertville unique and perfectly suited to recruiting new tourism business to the area. Formby retired in August 2020 to retire after 25 years with Albertville Parks and Recreation and moved right into the role as operations director the new Sand Mountain Park.

“The PEAK Awards showcase the work, service, creativity and contributions of those who are leading the way in the North Alabama tourism industry,” said Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association President/CEO Tami Reist. “With the COVID-19 pandemic still looming, it has been and continues to be a challenging year for the tourism industry. This year’s winners have demonstrated a commitment like no other to showcase the best of North Alabama during these unprecedented times. It is a well-deserved win for each of the recipients.”
