Holiday Tour of Decatur’s Historic Homes Lights Up the Town Dec. 14


Decatur, Ala. (November 25, 2024)  – The Albany and Old Decatur Historic Districts will present their annual Historic Decatur Christmas Tour on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, inviting the public to a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the enchanting beauty of beautifully decorated historic homes, each adorned with festive lights, ornaments and seasonal decorations. Fifteen tour sites consisting of homes, churches and historic places will be open for viewing as part of the self-guided tour from 2 to 8 p.m. Along with seeing some of Decatur’s most historic and architecturally significant dwellings, the festive event offers a first look at the recently relocated Judge Horton House on the new Scottsboro Boys Civil Rights Museum complex.

 

This year’s tour features three homes in the Old Decatur Historic District and three homes in the Albany Historic District, each beautifully decorated with luminaries, fruit, greenery and thousands of lights, four historic churches, two commercial firms, the Historic Decatur Union Train Depot and Decatur’s two newest attractions, the Decatur Scottsboro Boys Civil Rights Museum and the Judge James E. Horton Legal Learning Center. Residences in the Albany and Old Decatur Historic Districts are not normally open for public viewing except when a select number of homes open their doors during the annual holiday tour.

Along with the self-guided tour, merchants and restaurants in Decatur’s two downtown shopping districts will be open for dining and holiday shopping before and during the tour.

 

Tickets for the Historic Decatur Christmas Tour are $35 each and can be purchased in advance online at https://decaturchristmastour.com/. Proceeds from the tour are used to preserve, protect and enhance the character and legacy of the historic neighborhoods.

After unexpectantly losing her husband of 29 years, Karen returned to the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association (AMLA) in 2023 as the vice president of marketing and communications where she helps guide the organization’s marketing and communications activities to position the North Alabama region as a must-experience destination for leisure travel. She has over 30 years of marketing experience, most recently working as a behind-the-scenes freelance public relations consultant for AMLA and other tourism organizations and festivals in north Alabama and Tennessee. From 1999 to 2004, AMLA employed her as the organization’s marketing representative, introducing her to a lifelong career in the tourism and travel industry. Following the birth of her second child, she transitioned to part-time freelance employment so that she could focus on family life.

 

She was named the Alabama Restaurant & Hospitality Association Tourism Promoter of the Year in 2025. She serves on the board of directors for the Huntsville/Madison County Hospitality Association, is a member of the Decatur/Morgan County Hospitality Association and the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) and volunteers with the Woody Williams Foundation and Vets Like Us.

 

She holds a B.S. degree in marketing and a MBA from the University of North Alabama and received her TMP – Travel Marketing Professional – certification from the Southeast Tourism Society Marketing College. She and her late husband, Michael, have two children, Keller and Logan.
