Experience “The Miracle Worker” at Helen Keller’s Birthplace
 

Decatur, Ala. (April 16, 2026) – Residents and visitors alike are invited to experience the powerful story of perseverance and triumph at this year’s production of The Miracle Worker, performed at Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller in Tuscumbia. The play, which dramatizes the inspirational story of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan, will run on Friday and Saturday evenings from June 12 to June 27 and July 10 to July 18 with two additional performances on Thursday nights June 25 and July 16.

 

Set against the historic backdrop of the very home where Keller’s was born and raised, this powerful production brings to life the trials, triumphs and transformation that changed the course of history. Visitors from around the world come to Tuscumbia each year to experience the story in the setting where it all began.

 

The Miracle Worker at Ivy Green recalls the childhood of deaf-blind Keller, who suddenly lost her sight and hearing at the age of 19 months, and the extraordinary teacher, Annie Sullivan, who taught her to communicate with the world. The play carries the audience into the daily disappointments and then the miraculous breakthrough of the young Helen at the guidance of her teacher, with authentic costumes, an open-air stage and professional acting from a talented cast of local and regional actors. The production runs Friday and Saturday evenings beginning June 12 through June 27 and July 10 through July 18 at the birthplace of Helen Keller located at 300 North Commons Street West in Tuscumbia. This year, two additional performances are scheduled on Thursday nights June 25 and July 16. All performances begin at 8:00 p.m.

 

Gates open at 7 p.m. and play begins at 8 p.m. Patrons are welcome to walk the grounds prior to curtain. Admission is $20/reserved seating and $15/general admission. Groups of 20 or more receive a $2 discount per ticket. Special seating is available upon request for persons with special needs with a two-week notice. William Gibson was an American playwright and novelist who lived November 13, 1914 – November 25, 2008. He won the Tony Award for Best Play for The Miracle Worker in 1959, which he later adapted for the film version in 1962. Both the play and the film adaptation featured Patty Duke as Helen Keller and Anne Bancroft as Annie Sullivan. Produced by the Helen Keller Birthplace Foundation, Inc, The Miracle Worker at Ivy Green is in its 65th annual production and is the Official Outdoor Drama for the State of Alabama. After unexpectantly losing her husband of 29 years, Karen returned to the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association (AMLA) in 2023 as the vice president of marketing and communications where she helps guide the organization’s marketing and communications activities to position the North Alabama region as a must-experience destination for leisure travel. She has over 30 years of marketing experience, most recently working as a behind-the-scenes freelance public relations consultant for AMLA and other tourism organizations and festivals in north Alabama and Tennessee. From 1999 to 2004, AMLA employed her as the organization’s marketing representative, introducing her to a lifelong career in the tourism and travel industry. Following the birth of her second child, she transitioned to part-time freelance employment so that she could focus on family life.

 

She was named the Alabama Restaurant & Hospitality Association Tourism Promoter of the Year in 2025. She serves on the board of directors for the Huntsville/Madison County Hospitality Association, is a member of the Decatur/Morgan County Hospitality Association and the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) and volunteers with the Woody Williams Foundation and Vets Like Us.

 

She holds a B.S. degree in marketing and a MBA from the University of North Alabama and received her TMP – Travel Marketing Professional – certification from the Southeast Tourism Society Marketing College. She and her late husband, Michael, have two children, Keller and Logan.
