NORTH ALABAMA TOWN PAYS TRIBUTE TO FIRST RESPONDERS

Decatur, Ala. – In 1968, the city of Haleyville made history when Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite placed the first 911 emergency call from City Hall to U.S. Representative Tom Bevill at the city’s police station. To commemorate the pivotal moment in history, the city comes together to celebrate and to honor its police, fire, rescue, and emergency personnel with the annual 9-1-1 Festival. The 12th annual event is set for June 10-11, 2011.

The two-day festival kicks off on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the Haleyville Rotary Club BBQ Cook-off. Along with the cook-off, there will be a kids’ area with face painting, balloon animals, and a talent show for ages 12 years old and under, and live music featuring Man’s Best Friend Band, Billy Lawson, and Johnny Holland and the Rural Route Band.

The festivities continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday with a cheerleading competition on the Main Stage Area followed by a parade, the Rotary Club BBQ Cook-off People’s Choice Award at 10 a.m. and a Magic Show and Mayberry Deputy Barney Fife impersonator at 11 a.m. Live music continues on Saturday with performances by Donnie Glenn and Mandy Taylor and the Humboldt Band. The day wraps up at 3 p.m. with the Toray Club Cook-off awards at the Neighborhood Facilities Building.

The annual event also includes displays and exhibits provided by law enforcement, fire department, bomb squad, and other first responders throughout the mall area; a car and motorcycle show featuring law enforcement vehicles; and a kids’ area with a puppet show and water play. Festival-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

All activities are held in downtown Haleyville and admission is free. For more information or a schedule of events, call Festival Chairman Gary Warren at 205.269.4223.
