Decatur, Ala. – Like many southern towns, Arab, Ala. is home to a wild-growing plant which for many makes a delicious and nutritious side dish, and each year the town pays tribute to it with a one day celebration. Whether you consider it an herb, weed or vegetable, plenty of poke along with family fun and live bluegrass music will be served up in Arab May 21 during the annual Poke Salat Bluegrass Festival.
Beginning at 9 a.m., the downtown area will be filled with fun and games including a kid’s DJ and dance area, inflatables, sidewalk sales, arts and crafts, food vendors, an amateur barbecue cook-off, and a downtown music stage featuring bluegrass bands from across the region. This year’s celebration also includes a new bluegrass pickin’ and grinnin’ session at the downtown stage at 10 a.m. The downtown stage is located at Stephen Tuttle Park at the corner of Main Street and Highway 69. Admission is free. L Rancho Café’ located at 41 North Main Street, will be serving poke salat plates for lunch.
New for this year’s festivities is an ice cream eating contest for kids sponsored by Milner’s Dairy Delight. Children under 12 years old are invited to take part in the challenge which is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Arab Farmer’s Market on Main Street. Registration is on site prior to the contest.
The new city amphitheater at Arab City Park, located off of Shoal Creek Trail Northeast in downtown Arab, will be the setting for the Bluegrass Concert featuring Entertainer of the Year Dailey & Vincent. Gates open at 2 p.m. with the music firing up at 3 p.m. Other performers include The Boxcars, Canaan’s Crossing and Freshwater Creek. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate.
