ANNUAL EVENT HONORS TOWN’S COAL MINING HISTORY
Decatur, Ala. – Each May, the town of Brilliant, Ala., shines when the community comes together for its annual Coal Fest, a two-day event in honor of its coal mining history. The discovery of coal in the late 19th century marked the beginnings of the town providing growth and employment into the 20th century. Set for May 27 and 28, the 11th annual Coal Fest offers live music, games including a checkers match with champion Larry Pollard, activities for children, arts and crafts, and more throughout Main Street in downtown Brilliant.
The annual event kicks off on Friday at 5 p.m. with live music featuring Americana, country, and blues and runs continuously throughout the day on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. This year’s lineup includes Chris Knight, Tyler Reeve, Whiskey River Band, Joseph Baldwin, and T-Bone Brodie and Phonic Blue.
Brilliant is home to the state and national checkers champion, Larry Pollard. Around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Pollard will challenge local politicians to a friendly checkers match.
The historic Train Depot located in City Park will offer free guided tours (donations accepted) where artifacts of the early history of coal mining in Brilliant are on display. Shuttle service will be provided free of charge from the downtown area to City Park. Other activities include an antique car and tractor show, clogging, a horseshoe tournament, and a kid’s area with games, train rides and inflatables.
While admission is free to Coal Fest, a small fee is charged to participate in some of the children’s activities. The two-day event typically concludes around 10 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call 205.465.2281.
