Gadsden’s Annual Barbeque Cook-off in Search of Pros and Backyard Grillers

Decatur, Ala. – Gather your barbeque tools and your secret ingredients, it’s time for the annual Smoke on the Falls Noccalula Barbeque Festival. Hosted by the City of Gadsden Parks and Recreation, Downtown Gadsden Inc., and YMCA, the third annual event is set for April 8-9, 2011 at the Noccalula Falls Park and Campgrounds. The two-day event, set among a 90-foot waterfall, also includes ongoing live music and a kaleidoscope of children’s activities along with a chance to talk barbeque secrets with the pros.

The annual barbeque cook-off is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and serves as a pre-qualifier for an invitation to the American Royal BBQ Cookoff. The high-energy grilling competition offers a professional division and a backyard division where over $10,000 in prize money is up for grabs. Live music fills the air on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. with Mother May I, and Ronnie McDowell following at 8 p.m. Saturday’s line-up kicks off at 11:30 a.m. with the Weston Burt Band followed by 2BLU and The Lucky Stiffs at 2 p.m. Attendees will also be able to enjoy the splendor of Noccalula Falls, a variety of kids’ games, train rides, miniature golf, a petting zoo, and of course, lots of food including a free barbeque sandwich.

Gates open Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. The awards ceremony for the barbeque competition is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $10/day or $15 weekend pass for adults, $5/day or $7 weekend pass for children. Weekend passes are on sale now through April 6th. Daily passes are sold at the gate. Tickets may be purchased at Noccalula Falls (Kiwanis Pavilion), Gadsden Parks and Recreation main office, Downtown Gadsden Inc. located at 408 Broad Street, or YMCA of the Coosa Valley located at 100 Walnut Street in Gadsden.
